Equity indices and the volatility complex, beside the rates vol this site derives

Series through2026-10-20549 trading days from 2024-10-11

The equity view the rates pages have been missing: index levels and the listed volatility complex from public references, set against the swaption volatility this site derives, and the part of the equity derivatives market that reaches the CFTC public tape — synthetic financing by the hundred thousand prints a day, index swaps, and the variance and volatility swaps that price what the listed VIX prices, off-exchange.

Index levels

S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and the Dow from FRED's daily series, rebased to the start of the window so the three can share an axis, and the S&P's own 20-day realised volatility against the VIX — the implied-minus-realised gap that pays the variance seller.

Volatility

Cboe's published indices: the VIX term structure from nine days to one year, its history, and the two second-order gauges — VVIX, the implied volatility of VIX options, and SKEW, the price of tail protection relative to the at-the-money.

Rates vs equity vol

The site's own 3m10y normal swaption vol, in basis points a year, against the VIX, and the ratio between them. A rates-led shock lifts the ratio; an equity-led one drops it. The ratio is derived entirely from public data; the licensed rates-vol index it stands in for is not.

Equities tape

What the CFTC equities file carries each day: single-stock total-return swaps (synthetic financing and market access, including the China A-share, Taiwan and Korea blocks), index swaps by underlier, and the variance and volatility swaps whose strikes can be read against the listed VIX.

Insurers' equity books

What the statutory blanks say life insurers hold in equity derivatives, from the Schedule DB Part A rows parsed on the Insurers page. Most of it is not variable-annuity hedging at all; the part that is looks different from the rest, and almost none of it reaches the CFTC tape above.

Equity derivatives by insurer, latest statement parsed

Notional in $bn; "premium" is fair value of purchased calls as a share of their notional. One filer reports the notional column in contracts rather than dollars, so its notionals are shown as n/a and left out of the totals. Tenor is years from trade to maturity at the median position. Ladder is the share of the calendar year after the statement's maturities falling in the busiest month (8% would be perfectly even). Jackson's statement is only partly parsed: its futures and listed options sit in Part B and outside this extraction, so its row understates the largest variable-annuity hedge programme in the group.

It is mostly crediting hedges, not guarantee hedges. Three books carry $270bn of purchased index calls between them: one- and two-year tenors, bought roughly at the money, laddered so that no month holds more than a tenth of the year's maturities, and carried at four to seven percent of notional in premium. That is the hedge for the index credit on fixed indexed annuities and indexed life — the insurer owes the policyholder the upside of a capped index return and buys it back from a bank. Nearly half of the largest book's call notional now references custom and volatility-controlled indices rather than the S&P itself, and its counterparty list reads as the list of index sponsors: the option and the index come from the same bank. Those options never trade on a listed exchange and their vega lives in the index design.
The variable-annuity hedge looks different where it shows. Guarantee hedging is long-dated and short equity: purchased puts rather than calls, and total-return swaps paying the index against a funding rate. In these books it appears as $17bn of S&P puts with a median tenor of nearly six years, almost all maturing in 2031, carried near zero fair value — a buffer or floor hedge bought at inception of a five-year product — and as total-return swaps on the S&P, Russell and Dow against Fed funds or SOFR, in $100–370m pieces maturing 2027–2030. The delta hedge that does most of the work in a VA programme is in exchange-traded futures, which Schedule DB reports in Part B; that part is not parsed here yet, so the statutory view on this page understates VA hedging and overstates the share of crediting hedges.
These hedges do not reach the CFTC tape at anything like their size. The equities file above shows a dozen index option prints on a normal day. The largest call book alone has 21,800 positions maturing in the next twelve months, which means buying on the order of eighty replacement options a trading day; the three call books together need several times that. Either these trade as listed FLEX options, which are securities rather than swaps and never reach a swap data repository, or they are reported as security-based swaps on the SEC's tape, which this site does not yet load. For rates the public tape is the place to watch insurer behaviour and the blanks confirm it; for equity it is the other way round — the blanks are the record, and the tape sees only the variance swaps and the odd index put.
What on this page bears on a VA or FIA book. The one-year variance strike and VIX1Y are the cost of the next rung of a call ladder or a put roll, read off the tape rather than a dealer run. The term-structure chart shows what a two-year programme pays over a one-year one. The rates-versus-equity ratio is the relative price of hedging the two legs of a guarantee — rate floor and equity floor — in the same week. None of it is advice; all of it is public.

Method & caveats

Derived from the DTCC public price dissemination equities file and from Cboe and FRED public series; nothing licensed.

Index levels
FRED daily closes (S&P Dow Jones Indices via FRED, ten years). Realised vol is the 20-day standard deviation of log returns, annualised on 252 days.
VIX complex
Cboe's published daily closes: VIX (30-day), VIX9D, VIX3M, VIX6M, VIX1Y, VVIX and SKEW. The term structure plots them at 0.3, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.
Rates vs equity vol
3m10y at-the-money normal vol from the Options page (basis points a year) divided by the VIX close of the same day. Normal rates vol and lognormal equity vol are different animals; the ratio is a gauge of which market is moving, not an arbitrage.
Variance and vol swaps
Strikes decoded to vol points from the tape's mixed quoting — a decimal vol, vol points, or index points squared — and medians taken by index; prints whose quoting cannot be read are counted but not priced. The charted series is the one-year bucket (six to eighteen months to expiry) so it compares with VIX1Y; terms are the median years to expiry.
Index swaps
Underlier from the UPI name where given. Where the tape says "OTHER", the index is inferred from currency and the traded level in the price field and marked with a question mark in the data.
Single-stock swaps
Total-return and price-return swaps on single names, most with no obtainable underlier name. Notionals in other currencies are converted at fixed approximate rates for the aggregate only; the per-currency split is native.
Known limits. This is the CFTC side of the equity swap market: broad index products and the single-name financing swaps that fall under it. Security-based swaps on the SEC's tape are not loaded. Listed index options and futures — where most US index volatility trades — are not swaps and do not appear; the tape shows the over-the-counter margin of that market, a dozen variance swaps on a normal day. Option prints with a strike below one are zero-strike synthetics and are counted separately from options proper.
